Service and Relocation of Passive Seismic Geophones

Client: NORSAR
Contact: Charlotte Bruland

Kolibri Geo Services was contacted through a project partner by Charlotte Bruland of NORSAR, who needed local technical support for maintaining a passive seismic monitoring station in Svalbard. The system, based on geophones installed in the field, required routine servicing to ensure reliable data collection over the long term.

As a locally based company, Kolibri was able to respond quickly and provide regular field visits to check and maintain the installation. Our responsibilities included monitoring battery levels, recharging systems when needed, and downloading data for transfer to the research team. By doing so, we helped prevent data loss and avoided the need for expensive or delayed travel from the mainland.

During the most recent season, Kolibri also provided insights on snow distribution across the site—critical knowledge that helped inform adjustments to sensor placement. As a result, NORSAR contracted us again to relocate six geophones to better-performing positions.

This project demonstrates Kolibri’s ability to provide ongoing, responsive support for sensor-based monitoring systems—delivering technical oversight and practical field access in places where reliability matters most.

“Kolibri’s quick response and on-the-ground expertise have been essential to keeping our seismic monitoring system running smoothly in Svalbard’s challenging conditions.”
